User home drives map to the root of the share instead of their own folders

I have seen this on more than a handful of pc’s on the network where you have a users home drive (H: for example) is pointing to \\server\share\%username% but or some reason H:\ is pointing to \\server\share. Well the good news is that there is a simple fix to this one! there is a setting in the local policy of the computer, which can be set through GPO. All you need to do is enable the Wait for the network at computer startup and logon setting in: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\System\Logon\ If you are doing this for an individual computer you can...

Public Folder Replication

We have started to encourage our users to utilise public folders more, i.e. move all email that they do not need on a daily basis to their own public folder, as this will help keep our Exchange Mail Stores to a minimum! We did have a dedicated Exchange Server for Public Folders, one of our older Exchange boxes running Windows 2000 and Exchange 2000. This server had a Data store in the excess of 130GB and there was only 150GB of disk space, so if we wanted users to make good use of the store then we would...

mstsc /console doesn't work

I was recently trying to get on to the console's of my Windows Server 20003 servers using RDP, however for some reason it would not connect me to the console, each time I did a start run mstsc /console /v:servername I was logged onto the server with a separate session. I did a start run mstsc /? to bring up the RDP options and noticed that is now said /admin and not /console. It appears that this has changed since Service Pack 3 for XP and Service Pack 1 for Vista. Why would they change...

iSCSI and Failover Clustering

For the last couple of days I have been looking at the options that Windows Server 2008 Enterprise offers in terms of Clustering. I have never really looked at clustering before (apart from playing around with Hyper-V and clustering last week). As we do not use any live Virtual systems here in the office I thought that testing and playing around with that would not be good business development so I looked at the option for File Share clustering and also printer clustering. Up until now Clustering had been rocket science, you needed the same hardware and some would even say you...

Windows Server 2008 Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration

If your like me you probably find that the Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration is more of a pain than anything, every time you go to a website you have to add it to the safe zone, also it can sometimes cause problems when you install software on to the server, it will not allow the software to be installed on the server. With al those implications of having it enables I turn it off, usually during the server installation. To turn it off in Widows 2003 is pretty straight forward: Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Add/Remove Windows Componets....

Removing old backup servers from the backup server list

over the past few years my backup servers have under gone numerous re-installs and re-names, just as they move from one site to the other or they are just too low spec server. one of the things that started to bug be was that when you went to the drop down list to select a backup server it listed every server that you had had installed on your network. I was recently on a backup course for Backup Exec 11d in reading and the course instructor mentioned to me how to do it, so I thought its about...

Admin Pack on Windows 2008 Server

OK so I got the Admin Pack running on Windows Vista through manually registering the DLL's. The next step in my testing was Windows 2008 Server, so like most other techies I decided to download Windows 2008 Server from our MSDN Subscription. The install was identical to Vista, with the exception of being asked if I wanted to install a console version or the windows version. So I have installed windows and all is running fine, I then tried to installed the Admin tools and Exchange System Manager. I had the same problem as I had with Vista, I ran the...

The external...
